Slumber – “Fallout”
You can’t fault Slumber for writing catchy songs. The songs have that big symphonic sound with a huge, ever-present melancholy element. The vocals, even though they are of the growled variety, are completely acceptable, as they are not screamed/shouted. The vocals sound like an additional instrument, they are not overriding the music. This is also not a slow album, since the songs are mid-paced, with plenty of melodic hooks. The whole atmosphere is somber, but happy-in-a-somber-kind-of-way. It’s a cool type of depressive, catchy sound. Personally, I like this album. However, there are a couple of things that are kind of problematic: first, this type of music seems to be pretty inoffensive, harmless, which begs the question: does this band have any personality or character? Second, even though the melodies are good, it seems like are too derivative.
